The Global Justice Institute (GJI) condemns, in the strongest possible way, U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the armed forced will institute a new ban on military service by transgender persons. Former President Obama eliminated previous military policy that allowed for discrimination based on gender identity and/or expression. President Trump’s announcement is nothing less than reprehensible. The Williams Institute estimates that there are more than 15,000 transgender servicemenbers currently serving in the U.S. military. They serve honorably and with distinction. This reversal is wrong for the U.S. and an affront to the values it professes.
Reversing the ban on transgender military service preys upon honorable people who seek to serve their country. The ban is rooted in deplorable stereotypes and will exacerbate violence and discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people throughout the U.S. Given the presence of the U.S. military in armed conflicts around the globe, the President’s actions further place our transgender siblings in harm’s way. This will roll back progress we’ve made in advancing trans* rights and ending anti-trans* violence throughout the world. This policy has no place in a civilized world. The GJI rededicates itself to fighting the ban and to advancing justice for transgender and gender non-conforming people.
While the current administration may turns its back on current servicemembers and denigrate the more than 134,000 transgender veterans who remain with us, the Global Justice Institute will honor all of them, dedicating our time, talent, and treasure to ensuring they live and fight with dignity. We are all part of God’s family and entitled to the respect and opportunities afforded to each of us. GJI will leave no one behind in the march towards full equality.
